Spoon Announces Free Cloud Gaming Service

Alawar Entertainment, Namco Networks, and Independent Studios Bring Their PC Titles to the Cloud

SEATTLE, WA and AUSTIN, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 10/05/10 -- Spoon, a Seattle-based developer of virtualization and cloud computing technologies, today announced the launch of its new cloud gaming service. Game developers can use this free service to publish their existing PC titles to the cloud, allowing users to try, purchase, and play their games from any desktop with no installs. Leading game publishers, including Alawar Entertainment and Namco Networks America, as well as independent game studios have partnered with Spoon to offer their desktop game catalogs online. Featured titles include hit franchises such as Farm Frenzy, Treasures of Mystery Island, and PAC-MAN; multiplayer game clients such as Second Life; and independent titles such as Tiger Eye and Star Defender 4. The service was announced today at the Game Developers Conference in Austin, Texas.

"We are excited to introduce the world's first free cloud gaming service. Users can now demo and play desktop games without the hassles of installs, downloads and setups," said Kenji Obata, founder and chief executive officer of Spoon. "Game studios and publishers now have a fast, free way to combine the rich experience of their existing desktop PC catalogs with the business opportunities afforded by the Web, social networks and SaaS."

Spoon works with existing PC game titles and can be embedded into any website with a single line of HTML code. Spoon's unique virtualization technology executes games on the client hardware, providing zero-latency game play and enabling migration to the local desktop for offline use. Unlike other cloud gaming technologies, Spoon does not introduce latency or video quality degradation, require large datacenter and bandwidth investments, or require full-time client connectivity. Spoon also provides fully integrated payment processing, digital rights management, and analytics capabilities.

"We had been searching for a way to bring our large catalog of existing desktop games online," said Ilya Grabelnikov, partner relations manager for Alawar Entertainment. "Spoon successfully migrated our entire catalog of over 100 titles to the cloud -- all at zero-development cost."

"The PC games industry is looking for ways to leverage the power of the Web and social networks to help drive consumer demand. Yet until now there hasn't been a good way to deliver graphically rich games online while preserving the responsiveness and offline capability of the local experience," explains Michael Cai, vice president of video games at Interpret. "Spoon's technology enables game developers to bring their games to the cloud for free with no additional development."

Spoon's gaming publishers include Alawar Entertainment, Namco Networks, Awem Studios, PassionFruit Games, Wildfire Studios, and other emerging independent development studios.
